Diamond Melting Breakthrough Physics and Fusion Research

A recent breakthrough in high-pressure physics could have significant implications for clean energy research and planetary science. Scientists at **Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)** have successfully observed diamond melting under pressures approximately three times greater than those found at the center of the Earth. This achievement settles a scientific debate that has persisted for two decades, with previous computer models and laboratory experiments disagreeing by about 20% on diamond’s melting point. The findings were published in **Nature Physics**.

Using the **Omega Laser Facility** at the University of Rochester, the research team exposed tiny diamond samples to laser-driven shock waves, generating temperatures exceeding those on the Sun’s surface. Because these extreme conditions existed for only a billionth of a second, advanced X-ray techniques were employed to track changes in the diamond’s atomic structure. The observations revealed that solid diamond floats in liquid carbon, a behavior analogous to ice floating on water.

This discovery could advance **inertial confinement fusion**, a process central to facilities like the **National Ignition Facility**, where diamond capsules contain fusion fuel. The new results indicate that a slower initial laser shock wave can still melt the capsule, making the fuel more compressible. This technique could potentially increase fusion energy yield by up to **3 times** without requiring additional laser power.

The research also provides valuable insights for astronomers. A better understanding of carbon behavior under extreme pressure will enable more accurate models of ice giant planets such as **Neptune** and **Uranus**, where high pressures are believed to create diamond rain.
