Google’s Gemini app has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 1 billion monthly active users. This achievement places the AI assistant on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in terms of monthly user numbers, according to an announcement by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X. Pichai highlighted Gemini as one of the company’s fastest-growing products.

This new figure makes Gemini the 14th Google product to achieve the billion-user mark. The announcement comes shortly after ChatGPT reported reaching 1 billion monthly active users in June. While Google has integrated Gemini across its ecosystem—including Search, Workspace, Android, and its standalone mobile app—the latest statistic specifically counts users of the Gemini app itself and excludes those accessing AI features through other Google products.

In addition to the app milestone, Google’s AI Mode in Search has also surpassed 1 billion monthly active users globally.

Google also provided insights into user engagement with Gemini. The company reports that 63% of Gemini users utilize the assistant’s voice feature for communication. Furthermore, Gemini is generating over 150 million images daily, showcasing the growing use of generative AI beyond text-based interactions. The chatbot also boasts more than 100 million active users on iOS, indicating strong adoption outside of Google’s Android ecosystem.

Continuing its competitive push against OpenAI and other AI firms, Google has been releasing new Gemini models and features. Recently, the company introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash, designed to enhance coding capabilities and autonomous AI-agent tasks. This milestone follows Google’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, where the company reported over 950 million monthly Gemini users, with daily active users having tripled year-over-year.

Looking ahead, Google is expected to showcase additional Gemini-powered features for its Pixel devices at an upcoming Made by Google event. The rapid growth underscores Google’s strategy to make Gemini a central component of its products as competition in the consumer AI space intensifies.
