OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Desktop App for Linux

OpenAI has released an official ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, now available worldwide as a preview. The launch expands OpenAI’s desktop presence to all major operating systems, a move that addresses long-standing user demand. According to OpenAI, Linux has been one of the most requested platforms for a desktop application.

The new app provides direct access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex from the Linux desktop. The preview supports several major distributions, including Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. While Linux has hundreds of distributions, these supported versions serve as bases for many downstream distributions and desktop flavors, potentially extending compatibility to a wider range of environments. Linux users can now use a dedicated desktop experience rather than relying solely on web browsers or third-party tools.

This release follows a similar move by rival AI company Anthropic, which launched a Claude desktop app for Linux about a month earlier. Anthropic’s app supports Ubuntu 22.04 and later, as well as Debian 12 and later. The growing availability of official desktop apps from major AI firms highlights a broader trend toward making AI assistants accessible across diverse operating systems, particularly those popular with developers and open-source communities. With this preview, OpenAI now offers desktop access to ChatGPT across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
