DeepSeek Launches Premium V4 Pro Model with Higher API Pricing

DeepSeek has officially launched its V4 Pro model, positioning it as a premium flagship offering with pricing set significantly higher than its V4 Flash counterpart. The move signals the Chinese AI startup’s push to translate superior benchmark results into a more lucrative commercial product.

According to independent benchmarking firm Artificial Analysis, the V4-Pro-0813 model is priced at $1.32 per million input tokens and $3.96 per million output tokens. This represents approximately 9 times the input price and 14 times the output price of the V4 Flash model, which is listed at $0.14 and $0.28, respectively.

The company states that the V4 Pro delivers substantial improvements in capabilities for AI agents and is now accessible through its API, app, and web products. DeepSeek also announced upcoming changes to its API pricing structure, including increased rates for both V4 Pro and V4 Flash, along with the introduction of peak and off-peak pricing tiers.

The premium pricing comes after the V4 Flash model, released last month, unexpectedly outperformed an earlier preview version of V4 Pro in several independent tests. This was an unusual outcome, as the Pro line is intended to be the more capable offering, suggesting rapid technological advancement between the preview and official release.

Independent evaluations now indicate that the official V4 Pro release represents a significant step forward. Artificial Analysis assigns the reasoning version of V4 Pro a score of 53 on its Intelligence Index, compared to 40 for V4 Flash. The index aggregates assessments across nine features, including agentic work tasks, tool use, coding, scientific reasoning, and long-context performance.

DeepSeek, which gained prominence after its R1 model went viral in early 2025, has faced increasing competition from Chinese rivals such as Moonshot AI, Zhipu AI, MiniMax, Alibaba, and ByteDance. The company is also working to establish a sustainable business model. Reuters reported in July that DeepSeek was planning a new fundraising round at a valuation of approximately $74 billion, just weeks after raising about $7.4 billion in its first external financing round in June.

The funding marks a strategic shift for a company that previously avoided outside capital, reflecting the high costs of competing in AI, which demands substantial investments in computer chips, data centers, and specialized talent. DeepSeek has indicated plans to at least double staffing across departments, including data-center and AI-agent teams. Additionally, Reuters reported in July that the company has increased private hiring of chip-design engineers to develop its own AI chip, an effort that could reduce reliance on suppliers such as Nvidia and Huawei.
