Amazon is expanding its AI assistant, Alexa+, to all compatible Fire TV devices in the U.S. at no extra cost, regardless of Prime membership status. The rollout, announced on Wednesday, brings conversational search, smart home controls, and AI-powered recommendations to a wider audience.
Previously, Alexa+ was priced at $19.99 per month for non-Prime members and was initially available only on the new Fire TV devices announced last fall. Now, Amazon says all users will be upgraded to Alexa+ automatically, with no need to download an app or sign up for a subscription.
Compatible devices include all current-generation Amazon Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and other smart TVs with Alexa+ built in, such as those from Hisense and Panasonic.
This move follows a broader industry trend of integrating AI services into consumer electronics, often through non-optional upgrades. For instance, Google rolled out Gemini to its Google TV platform earlier this year, replacing simple search with AI-powered conversational modes. Roku also upgraded its voice assistant to AI last year.
Amazon reports that Alexa+ customers now have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV compared to the original Alexa, suggesting users are engaging with the AI beyond passive entertainment. With Alexa+, users can ask for show suggestions based on themes like “a top-rated thriller” or “a historical drama with a strong female lead,” rather than just by title. The assistant can also help manage smart home devices, including displaying Ring camera feeds on the TV.
