YouTube has announced stricter monetization requirements for its YouTube Partner Program (YPP), affecting new creators seeking to earn through the platform.

Under the revised policy, long-form videos will require 8,000 hours of watch time over the past 12 months, up from the previous 4,000 hours. For Shorts, creators will need 20 million views in the last 90 days, doubling the previous 10 million view requirement.

These changes take effect on February 1, 2027. Existing YPP members will not be directly impacted. To remain in the program, Shorts creators must maintain at least 10 million views in 90 days; failing to do so means they can stay in the program and earn from long-form videos but must re-earn the 10 million views to monetize Shorts again.

YouTube stated the changes aim to keep pace with platform growth, noting that over 200 billion Shorts are viewed daily and TV screens account for nearly 1 billion watch hours per day.
