AI-generated fake images, videos, and audio are often so realistic that distinguishing between authentic and fabricated content becomes challenging for the average user. Deepfake technology can replicate a person’s face, voice, movements, and speech patterns to create synthetic material that appears genuine, typically using generative AI and deep learning techniques that learn patterns from available data.
While deepfakes are commonly associated with videos, voice cloning is also possible, enabling scammers to impersonate relatives, officials, or bank representatives to request money, passwords, OTPs, or other sensitive details. To identify a fake video, users should watch for mismatched lip movements, unnatural facial expressions, irregular eye movements, blurred edges, or inconsistent lighting and shadows. Audio anomalies like robotic tones or sudden shifts can also signal manipulation.
Experts suggest the ‘three-finger rule’ as a preliminary check during video calls, asking the person to hold three fingers in front of their face, though this method is not foolproof. In case of suspected fraud, contact cybercrime authorities, preserve all evidence, and report fake content on the respective platform. Verifying information before sharing and being cautious with personal details remain essential precautions.
