AI Used to Create New Viruses Raises Biosecurity Concerns

Researchers have, for the first time, reportedly used artificial intelligence (AI) to create new viruses, raising serious concerns among experts about biosafety and biosecurity.

In a new study, scientists used an AI system to develop bacteriophages—viruses that infect and destroy bacteria. According to the researchers, the newly created viruses can kill strains of E. coli bacteria that naturally occurring viruses were ineffective against.

However, experts from the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, Tom Inglesby and Moritz Hanker, have warned that this development could mark a significant and dangerous turning point for biosafety. They noted that the ability to generate viral genomes through generative AI now exists, but the necessary governance and safeguards have not advanced at the same pace.

The scientists involved in the research also acknowledged potential risks, advising that future researchers should continuously consult safety and security experts during their projects. While AI-driven biological research may open up possibilities for treatments, effective protective measures are essential to address potential misuse and biosecurity threats.
