Amazon has announced a significant expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery operations, with plans to reach nearly 500 U.S. cities by the close of 2026. This move will dramatically enlarge the service area of a network that currently serves just 10 metropolitan regions and is supported by 11 operational bases.
The rollout will include major urban centers such as Chicago and Atlanta, as well as other cities like Syracuse, Cleveland, and Boise. This expansion is part of Amazon’s wider strategy to make drone delivery a viable option for routine purchases, using the technology to expedite the delivery of everyday essentials, pharmaceuticals, and other small consumer products.
Prime Air drones are engineered to handle lightweight packages with a maximum weight of 5 pounds (2.26 kilograms). Parcels must fit within dimensions similar to a large shoebox. The service aims to deliver eligible orders to customers within roughly 60 minutes, and depending on the delivery location and operational conditions, some packages may arrive in less than an hour.
The pricing structure for drone delivery varies based on whether the customer holds a Prime membership and the total value of the order. Prime members can receive free drone delivery on purchases of $50 or more, while orders below that amount incur a $3 delivery fee. Customers who are not Prime members are charged a flat $5 fee for the rapid drone delivery service.
By integrating drone delivery into its logistics network, Amazon aims to cut down on delivery times and enhance last-mile logistics, bringing faster, more efficient service to customers across the country.
