Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max could receive an exclusive camera upgrade that may not be available on the standard Pro model, according to a new leak. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to launch next month with several upgrades, including a faster A20 Pro chipset, larger batteries and improved camera systems. However, tipster Ice Universe claims Apple could limit one of the most anticipated camera features — a variable-aperture main camera — to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Rumours of a variable-aperture camera for the iPhone 18 Pro series have circulated for some time. According to the latest claim, the additional hardware required for the technology needs more internal space, making the larger Pro Max model a better fit. The tipster did not provide further details about the camera system or how the variable aperture would improve photography on the device. A variable-aperture camera can adjust the size of the lens opening, allowing more or less light to reach the sensor and potentially providing greater control over exposure and depth of field.
The latest camera rumour follows an earlier claim from the same tipster that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could weigh around 240 grams and measure about 9mm thick. If accurate, that would make the upcoming flagship slightly heavier and thicker than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max. The additional size could potentially give Apple more room for camera components and a larger battery.
This would not be the first time Apple has differentiated its Pro Max model through camera hardware. In 2023, the iPhone 15 Pro Max introduced a tetraprism telephoto camera offering 5x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro featured a 3x optical telephoto camera. Apple could follow a similar strategy with the iPhone 18 series by making the variable-aperture camera a Pro Max-exclusive feature.
