Google has introduced a comprehensive set of new study tools across its Search and Gemini platforms, designed to enhance learning with AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, and personalized practice quizzes. The announcement, made on Wednesday, underscores Google's push to position Gemini as the go-to AI assistant for students, competing with offerings from OpenAI and education-focused startups like Knowt and Gauth.

New Search Features for Students

In Search, students can now generate custom tools and simulations to better understand complex topics. For instance, searching for "pH scale" yields an interactive visual within an AI Overview, simplifying the basics. Users can further tailor the experience by asking follow-up questions, such as plotting citrus fruits on the pH scale, prompting AI Mode in Search to create a bespoke interactive experience.

Customized practice quizzes are now available directly in Search across subjects like science, math, humanities, and foreign languages. For example, a user can prompt, "Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SAT," and Search will generate an interactive quiz.

In the coming weeks, Lens in Search will introduce an interactive learning experience to help students work through problems. By tapping the Lens camera icon in the Google app and uploading a photo of their work, students can receive AI-driven explanations, identify potential mistakes, and get guidance when stuck.

Additionally, students can now ask Search to create study documents from uploaded files, including PDFs, docs, and slides. For example, uploading a photo of handwritten notes along with lecture slides can generate a one-pager outlining key concepts.

Gemini's New Capabilities

Google is launching a feature that allows students to initiate multi-step research reports in Gemini Live and then discuss the findings conversationally. Users can ask Gemini to research a topic, close the chat, or do other tasks while it works in the background. A notification alerts them when the report is ready, after which they can discuss the findings or ask follow-up questions using voice.

Gemini can now generate functional 3D simulations to aid understanding, with responses including tables, grids, and simulations tailored to the prompt. For instance, entering "show me how DNA works in 3D" enables users to interactively rotate and zoom into a 3D DNA structure.

A Dedicated Student Hub

Google is also launching a dedicated hub in the Gemini app that consolidates its learning tools. Users can start a study notebook, create flashcards, take practice quizzes, and more within this centralized space.
