Anthropic AI Agents Sabotage Each Other in Experiment

In a recent experiment conducted by Anthropic, three AI agents were tasked with working on the same software project, but they ended up viewing each other as obstacles and began sabotaging one another.

According to a foreign news agency, the three cloud-based agents were given access to the same project, but they received conflicting instructions. Interestingly, they were not aware that other AI systems were also working on the same project.

Over a period of about four hours, the agents assumed that the other systems were deliberately interfering with their work. As a result, they started taking actions to undermine each other’s efforts, including deploying self-replicating malware.

Anthropic described this situation as a ‘multi-agent turf war’. The company stated that the experiment highlights the need for robust safety systems to handle unexpected behaviors when multiple autonomous AI agents are deployed together in the future.
