Microsoft Merges Copilot Apps

Microsoft is consolidating its consumer and business AI assistant apps into a single Copilot experience, a move that acknowledges the overlap between personal and professional AI use and simplifies its strategy in the competitive AI landscape.

Two years after calling AI a “generational shift,” Microsoft is now merging the consumer-facing Copilot app with the business-oriented Microsoft 365 Copilot app. The integration, detailed in Microsoft’s support documentation, aims to create a more unified product.

This consolidation reflects that users’ personal and professional AI needs often intersect, and that Microsoft’s previous, more fragmented approach made it harder for Copilot to compete with rivals like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The move is part of a broader trend in the AI app space, with competitors like OpenAI and Google also streamlining their offerings.

As part of the transition, Microsoft will retire several consumer features by August 18, 2026, including Group Chats, AI-generated podcasts, Copilot Labs experimental features, and Deep Research. For paying professional users, the Researcher feature will serve as a replacement for Deep Research. The company is also discontinuing its animated character, Mico, which was seen as a modern-day Clippy.

Microsoft warns that some features may temporarily disappear during the transition, and files from the standalone Copilot app will be migrated to OneDrive. The company’s stated goal is to create a “simpler, more cohesive experience,” but the move also signals an admission that Copilot needed to refocus. In July, an internal memo from Microsoft EVP Jacob Andreou reportedly emphasized that Copilot needed to earn “the right to exist” in customers’ lives, necessitating the removal of features that weren’t working.
