Sila, a U.S.-based battery materials startup, has secured a $1.4 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Defense to scale up production of its silicon-carbon anode material. The loan, announced on Friday, comes amid growing demand from U.S. battery buyers—ranging from automakers to defense contractors—for materials produced outside of China. Most lithium-ion battery anodes currently rely on graphite, a supply chain dominated by Chinese companies.
Sila’s silicon-carbon material is produced at its Moses Lake, Washington facility, which began operations in September and currently has an annual capacity of about 2 gigawatt-hours. The company plans to expand the factory fivefold, which would enable it to produce enough material for more than 100,000 electric vehicles.
Silicon anodes are seen as a promising alternative to graphite, offering the potential to store 20% to 40% more electricity. This improved energy density could lead to longer-lasting batteries or smaller, lighter designs, which are attractive for defense and mobility applications, including drones and EVs. Sila joins other companies like Group14 and Amprius in pursuing this technology.
The new loan follows a $300 million funding round in July, led by Atreides Management and Sutter Hill Ventures. To date, Sila has raised over $1.5 billion from private investors. The company has already secured partnerships with Mercedes and Panasonic. The Pentagon loan may also open opportunities with defense contractors, who have been securing major deals amid ongoing conflicts.
In addition to Sila, the Department of Defense announced agreements with three other companies. Sunrise Energy Metals, an Australian firm, will receive a $400 million loan to mine scandium, a rare earth element used in lightweight alloys. Niron Magnetics, based in Minnesota, secured a $150 million loan to produce rare earth-free magnets for smartphones, missiles, and electric motors. The government also made an $85 million equity investment in Strategic Bauxite, a company that mines aluminum-bearing minerals.
