OpenAI Launches ChatGPT App for Linux

OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT app for Linux, marking the company’s entry into one of the most-requested platforms for its desktop application. The app is now available worldwide in preview.

The release extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system, according to the company. The Linux app supports desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. These distributions serve as the base for various downstream desktop distros, which should also be compatible.

The launch follows Anthropic, which released a Claude desktop app for Linux about a month ago, available for Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
