Joby Aviation to Acquire Resonant Sciences for $500 Million

Joby Aviation has agreed to acquire Resonant Sciences for $500 million in cash and stock, according to a regulatory filing posted Tuesday. The Ohio-based company, which specializes in radio frequency and sensor systems, will become a dedicated defense business under Joby, led by Resonant Sciences’ co-founder and CEO J. Micah North.

The new division will absorb Joby’s defense projects, including the development of a turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft and its autonomy technology stack. This move allows the rest of Joby to focus on certifying, manufacturing, and launching its electric air taxi.

Resonant Sciences reported $100 million in trailing 12-month revenue and provides access to classified U.S. government programs. Joby previously acquired Blade Air Mobility’s helicopter rideshare business for about $125 million last year, which contributed $36.2 million of its $38.6 million in second-quarter revenue.
