Google Changes Photo Backup Process in August 2026

Google has announced a significant change to how photos are backed up on computers, effective August 10, 2026. The company will end the automatic transfer of photos between the Google Drive desktop backup and Google Photos.

Users who back up computer photo folders through Google Drive and expect them to appear in Google Photos will be affected. After August 10, backups must be configured directly through the Google Photos website. This involves selecting the backup folders option and granting the necessary permission.

The backup will continue automatically, but the Google Photos website or its web app must remain open. For Mac users, Google Photos cannot directly back up the Apple Photos library. They must first sync photos via iCloud, then use the Google Photos app on iPhone or iPad to save them.
